Mr. Benny “Monk” Smith, age 90 of Manchester, passed away Friday, January 7th, 2011 at the Laurel Creek Health Care Center. He was born Sunday, January 18th, 1920 in Clay County, Kentucky to the union of Elbert and Mollie Farmer Smith. He was a member of the Horse Creek Baptist Church, a retired mechanic, he was basketball referee and baseball umpire for many years even on the collegiate level, and was deputy coroner and coroner for Clay County for many years.

He is survived by his children: Chester Benny Smith of Manchester, Elbert Wayne Smith of Manchester, and Betty Sharon Roberts of Manchester. Also surviving are these grandchildren: Dennis Smith, Jennifer Chadwell, Benny Dewayne Smith, Glenn Roberts, Mark Roberts, Stephen Roberts, and James Michael Roberts, and 13 great grandchildren: Savannah Smith, Lauren Chadwell, Thomas Chadwell, Codi Roberts, Macy Roberts, Thomas Roberts, David Roberts, Sharah Roberts, Lucas Roberts, Lane Roberts, Andrew Roberts, and Peyton Roberts.

Funeral Services for Mr. Benny “Monk” Smith will be Sunday, January 9th, 2011 at 3 PM at the Rominger Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. William Hugh Hudson will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Manchester Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 9th, from 1:30 until funeral time at the Rominger Funeral Home Chapel.

Rominger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
